Graphic design students to exhibit work in Gallery at Penn College

Sixteen students majoring in graphic design at Pennsylvania College of Technology will exhibit more than 160 pieces of work from April 30 to May 7 at The Gallery at Penn College. The exhibit will include stationery packages, brochures, magazine spreads, advertisements, posters, one-of-a-kind books, corporate-identity programs, and graphic design for packaging and the Web.

Students answer challenge; exhibiting at Harrisburg museum

At the beginning of the spring semester, Penn State Harrisburg instructor in art Paul Manlove issued a challenge to the 25 students in his graphic design class. The results of that challenge will be on public display at The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg beginning with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on May 14.

Graphic communications students from Pennsylvania College of Technology earned a first-place trophy for their information booth at the Flexographic Technical Association's Annual Forum, held May 2-6 in Orlando, Fla. The students also participated in numerous technical presentations and seminars and had the opportunity to meet with industry leaders.

"Celebrating Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Day and Black History Month," an exhibit featuring posters designed by Penn State students in the University's 29th annual MLK poster competition, will be on display from Jan. 6 through Feb. 28 in the entry lobby of Pattee Library. This year's theme is "Reflect on Yesterday, Experience Today, Transform Tomorrow."

The goal of the Jared Box Project is to uplift the spirits of children in the hospital. The boxes themselves -- as well as the project website and related materials -- recently got a “lift” of their own, thanks to Penn State graphic design students Meagh Cafferty and Annie Seighman. After designing a new logo for the Jared Box Project as part of a class assignment, Cafferty and Seighman went on to volunteer their time to redesign the non-profit organization’s website and marketing materials.

When Penn State Graphic Design student Saige Sommese learned the 2016 THON theme was “Believe Beyond Boundaries,” she immediately thought of outer space—a “boundary” that we have overcome. So, when assigned the task of designing a possible logo for THON 2016, she chose to visually represent the theme with a bright orange rocket ship breaking through a turquoise semi-circle dotted with white stars.

Internationally acclaimed graphic designer Chaz Maviyane-Davies will deliver a talk titled "Creative Defiance" as part of the Stuckeman School lecture series from 6 to 8 p.m. March 30 in the Stuckeman Family Building Jury Space. The lecture will be followed by a gallery reception for Maviyane-Davies' concluding exhibit in the Stuckeman School's Rouse Gallery. Both events are free and open to the public.

Three new vehicles from Penn State Transportation Services are sporting a look that illustrates a commitment to sustainability, thanks to the creativity of Penn State graphic design students. At the Campus and Community Sustainability Expo, held on April 25 in State College, three Honda Civics powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) were unveiled, each featuring a vehicle wrap designed by the students.

Penn State Graphic Design student Ashley Turcheck had her dream become reality when she snagged a summer internship at Michael Kors in New York City. Turcheck, who will graduate in May 2017, has long been a fan of Michael Kors and says she has loved fashion since she was a kid. At Penn State, she juggles her rigorous academic schedule with membership in the Blue Band, where she plays trombone and serves as graphic design chair.
